For 30 hours, we invite you to meet, engage and connect over real-life challenges currently being addressed by businesses and institutions in one of the following categories:

Digital Banking Challenges

Banking API for the non-banking world - 1000 € award

Accept the challenge by BRD and you can win 1000 €.

In this time where information is gold, having access to a new set of data is invaluable.

The challenge, if you accept it, is to create an application that will make use of those new set of PSD2 related information in the most useful and creative way.

You can consider yourself part of another industry (retail, insurance, tourism, transport, public authority) and propose an application that will revolutionize your current offering with this new set of data.

You can also build something totally new and blow our mind! The only requirement is to make good use of the data you have access to!

Background: The banking industry is going to witness one of the most incredible revolutions in its history with the arrival of a new European directive called PSD2 for Payment Service Directive 2.

In a nutshell, this directive will allow any company to perform two tasks that were, until now, only reserved for banks.

The first one is to allow any company to connect to banks and get access to customer data (of course, with the agreement of the user). This means accessing all the information about the user account: balance, statement, history of transactions, etc. This is called Account Information Service.

The second one will allow a company to trigger a payment that the bank will have to execute (once again, if it has the user authorization). This action is called Payment Initiation Service

The directive will enter into force in 2018 but nobody is currently able to foresee the changes in the market that it will produce! However, we all want to understand and imagine the product of the future and that is why we are proposing this challenge.

Considerations: The criteria we will use to evaluate the applications are:

  • Innovative approach
  • Customer centricity and User experience
  • Execution (quality of the app)

.Tools: In order to make it as realistic as possible, BRD teamed up with Younify to give the Megahackers with an environment that will simulate a bank and all the data that could be available.

You will also have access to the Younify sandbox that your application can connect to using a set of APIs. The documentation of the API can be found at https://developer.younify.ro/psd2-api/ and technical staff will be present at the event to support you. Please note that for the sake of simplification, for the Megahack, the authorization mechanism is not needed to be developed so you can focus on the product.

 Expected outcome: You should present a new running smart-phone or browser app or one/more functionalities in an existing app.

Banking API for better payment experience - 1000 € award

Accept the challenge by BRD and you can win 1000 €.

For the first time in the bank history, any third party company will be able to trigger a payment from a bank to another bank (with the authorization of the user).

This is the opportunity to re-design the whole process of payment as we currently know it.

Let your imagination wander and create an application having in mind first the user experience and second the simplicity of integration.

This application can be a new payment service which could be standalone, embedded at a merchant site, used in the offline world, etc. The only limit is that there is no limit!

IoT & Embedded Challenges

Parking Management by iQuest - 500 € award

Accept the challenge by iQuest and you can win 500 €.

Create a parking lot app where parking spots are assigned automatically based on a set criteria like how long a person has been in the company. The app should allow the user to set a vacation time so that their spot automatically can be assigned to some one else. In the parking lot we can hang 7 segment displays above each spot and display the spot number and license plate that should park there. All the displays would be connected to a system that communicates with the app so it can be updated instantly. All a user needs to do now is to check their mobile app to see if they have a spot for the next day and the system does the assigning and spot management.

Gamification of Public Transportation by iQuest - 500 € award

Accept the challenge by iQuest and you can win 500 €. 

Core Problem: Endless rush hour traffic jams, insufficient parking spaces throughout the city.

Secondary Problem: Massive gap between people who support mass transit and those who actually use it.

Objective: A digital solution to encourage people in the city to choose alternative transportation options available to them. (Mass transit, bike, car sharing, walking)

Solution: Most of the problems involved in using alternative ways of transport cannot be influenced.

(Ex. We can’t make the bus/tram go faster or reduce the number of stops per route or change the weather to be suitable for biking or walking)

What we can do is create a web app that allows “players” to earn points every time they avoid using their car to go to work.

Description: Create an application that rewards you for riding mass transit, walk or bike to work and home.

The user receives points every time he/she chooses to use:

  • CTP (swipes their ticket card, buys an E-ticket or uses a MobilePay Wallet ticket)
  • ClujBike ( the user swipes the card for a bike)
  • The app connects to one of the health apps(Samsung Health, LG Health, etc.) preloaded onto all phones that measure distance traveled by foot rewarding points for it

Points earned can be exchanged for: Gift cards, theater or opera tickets, discounts, other benefits…..

Satellite Data: Climate Change

EOVation Climate Mitigation by ARIES Transilvania - win 500 €

 ESA – European Space Agency together with EO ClimLabEOVation- ClimateChangeMitigation and Tech Industry Association ARIES Transilvania dares you to create an app, using European satellite data, in order to map how the weather is affecting certain regions in Romania. Accept the challenge and you can win 500 €.

This challenge can be approached in more than one way. Please see Expected Outcome.

Background:

The European Space Agency provides huge amounts of data satellite data for free; Commercial data prices are also decreasing and sample imagery is available for testing solutions.  Sentinels (1, 2, 3) of ESA’s Copernicus programme provide SAR, Imagery and multispectral data that can be used for applications in precision agriculture, forestry, urban planning.  Although free data is not yet frequent enough for consumer applications (data recurrency >6 days), urban planners, environmentalists, agronomists can use the data for improving their activity.  Artists can design creative ways of using the data for representing different aspects of everyday life.  Tourism agencies can use the data to make appealing maps.  A common approach of geographers, biologists, artists and environmentalists, supported by ITC experts can help mitigate climate change, both via dissemination campaigns and awareness creating maps.

Considerations:

Teams need to consider that ESA data is available both from platform.eoclimlab.eu and directly from the ESA scihub.  Also, data availability is subject to ESA’s storage capabilities, weather conditions (especially for Sentinel2) and relevance of the area on a global scale.  Satellite orbits are not perfectly identical, so processing of data using tools like ESA’s SNAP, QGIS, or other tools may also help out.  Programmatically working with Sentinel data (satellite data in general) requires some previous know-how like GDAL libraries or programming languages like JavaScript (OpenLayers/leaflet), Python or C/C++.

Equipment and tools:

Any Windows/Linux PC is ok; SNAP or QGIS for local processing can be useful;  can also be installed on site.

OpenLayers is recommended for displaying data;  GDAL is required for processing;  GDAL Libraries are available for Java, Python and C/C++.

Expected Outcome:

Developing a project related to climate change using earth observation data, preferably in one of the following domains:

  1. Identify green urban areas in Romania
  2. Find changing landscape in Romania
  3. Provide an artistic interpretation of climate change specific data (maps, presentations), that make scientific data more appealing or more impacting for the masses
  4. Find ways to improve Open Street map using Earth Observation data
  5. Create an artistic map of Romania focused on climate change
  6. Create a synergy between Earth Observation Data and IoT devices (Raspberry Pi, Arduino)
  7. Find a creative way to bring value using Earth Observation

ARIES Transilvania (Romanian Association for Electronic Industry and Software) is the largest and most influential organization created for the IT&C industry in Romania, a voice that supports the interests of its members both in Romania and abroad, with more than 250 member companies, educational institutions, and organizations support. Also, ARIES through its subsidiaries – Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Craiova, Brasov and Iasi is considered the largest association of its kind in Southeast Europe.

ARIES Transilvania is implementing EO ClimLab project, a collaborative research e-environment project, enabling the rapid development and prototyping of new Earth Observation (EO)-based products aiming to support adaptation and mitigation to climate change across multi-disciplinary societal and business themes (e.g. agriculture, health, risk management, infrastructure maintenance, education, outreach).

In particular, the EO ClimLab includes the following physical and virtual elements:

  • Data from EO satellites, with focus on ESA missions,
  • Open Data from local providers and IoT sensors,
  • Processing and storage capabilities,
  • Tools for visualization, programming, and processing,
  • Development Tool Kits (e.g. IoS, Android.)

Smart City

Towed Cars Application - by Cluj-Napoca City Hall

Accept the challenge by Cluj-Napoca City Hall.

Background: We want a city that is an environment of innovation, responsibility, empowerment and participation of citizens and other stakeholders in shaping their future, using technology to increase the quality of the public services and not only.

This challenge is related to creating an application which provides the citizens all the needed information in case their car has been towed thus, giving them all the steps that need to be taken in order to regain their cars.

Local administration is just one of the actors involved in the use of technology and plays a role as facilitator and coordinator on certain segments, alongside entreprises, academia and the citizens. This is why we need to improve and at the same time ease the procedures for this situation and not only.

The application will notify the owner that his car has been towed, where it’s taken and how much is the fine, in how much time he has to do the payments and so on. Through this platform, we will be able to have an updated database with all the registered cars in Cluj but at the same time, with the other cars as well and in this way we will have a more accurate situation with the mobility in our city.

The role of the administration cannot be limited to investment in technological infrastructure and e-government applications, but should ensure a level of digital competence among citizens and the participation of all those interested in finding the most appropriate solutions. Ensuring access to data and technology for applied solutions to local issues such as the one of towed cars.

Description: Cluj-Napoca city hall is the local administration of the second biggest city in Romania, the capital of Transylvania and one of the most dynamic and developed city in Romania.
Cluj-Napoca is an attractive destination for investors, a dynamic city always trying to align its economic policies with the macro economical evolution.
The young, well-educated, competitive and qualified labor force is one of the main assets of the city when it comes to attracting investors. Cluj-Napoca is internationally acknowledged as a safe, friendly and pleasant city, being an academic center & youthful city – 12 universities, 80.000 students.
The vision established at Cluj-Napoca is included in its strategy for 2014-2020, which defines the city’s development in terms of the “quality of life of its inhabitants”, proposing to strike a balance between economic growth and social cohesion, a more energy efficient city, with better urban mobility, an inclusive and safe city, the citizen being a partner of the administration.

Context: The primary objective of any city is to provide to its citizens and visitors access to all institutions and public services, keeping up with modern quality life standards. Technology can provide solutions to some complex problems faced by cities, offering creative and innovative approaches.

The reason behind this application is to fasten and ease the procedure of this impediment so nor the citizen whose car has been towed nor the public authorities waste time and resources.

We want a city that is an environment of innovation, responsibility, empowerment and participation of citizens and other stakeholders in shaping their future, and a way to facilitate this process is to ease the interaction with public institutions through this application idea.

We aim to discuss technology as a user-tested and validated tool in helping to solve city problems. This being the main reason of why we should develop such an application.

We also want to overcome the rigidities of the local administration system and increase administrative capacity, responsibility towards its citizens and also fasten its reaction and responsiveness.

Transylvania MegaHack is part of Cluj TechFest, a collaborative effort generated by Startup Transilvania Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center.

Who is Startup Transilvania Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center?

Startup Transilvania Entrepreneurship and Innovation Center is a platform for information, education, collaboration and networking, aimed at developing and financing new generations of entrepreneurial projects in the region of Transylvania. This initiative is a one stop shop meant to inspire young people to believe in their own ideas, to cultivate their innovation and to start their own business.

How will the hackathon work?

Participants are presented with real-world challenges of current interest to local and national businesses and institutions, from across different domains. Each challenge will be briefly presented and published before the hackathon. Participants then select which challenge they would like to work on. Teams will be formed and the hacking will begin. Mentors will be available to help assist, provide guidance, and answer any questions the participants might have.

Technical competition and prizes – level 1:

At the conclusion of the “hacking” period, each challenge owner will determine one winner for each individual challenge and award prizes. The teams should focus on the effectiveness of the solution but you will be awarded points for complexity, completeness, creativity, originality.

Pitching competition and prizes – level 2:

The winners of each challenge will automatically qualify for the MegaHack pitching competition. The winners will prepare a brief presentation (3 min. + 2 min. Q&As) and introduce their solution to the audience and the panel of judges. Three prizes will be awarded for the quality of their presentations.

Who can participate in the hackathon?

The hackathon is open to engineers, coders, makers, hackers, geeks, testers, freelancers, employees, students, IT enthusiasts, designers.

Is there a minimum age required for participation?

As an incentive, this competition is open to up to 30 high school students (who will be admitted on a first come first served basis). Underage participants must have a parent or guardian approval before attending.

You can register either as an individual or as a team but we strongly encourage you to form a team before the hackathon. For those who don’t have a team there will be a short matchmaking session at the beginning of the competition.

Can I join with my team?

We strongly encourage you to form a team of up to 5 members before the hackathon.

How many team members can we have?

We encourage you to attend in teams of up to 5 members.

Do all team members need to register?

No, the team leader will sign up the entire team.

My team is bigger than 5, how can I register?

The extra members will register individually mentioning the name of the team they are part of.

What if I don’t have a team yet?

Teams will be formed in a matchmaking session prior to the event. More details will be communicated to the registered participants.

Do I need to know how to code in order to participate?

Yes, you should have basic programming knowledge. Transylvania MegaHack is open to talented and creative individuals with interest in IT.

Can I sleep at the hackathon?

You can stay overnight, but there will not be a designated resting area. We do not provide mats and you will need to bring your sleeping bag.

If I cannot stay the entire period can I still participate?

Yes, provided that there will be someone in your team to pitch your solution.

24/7 on-site presence is not required from anyone but we encourage you to be present as we prepared lots of fun perks for you.

Are there going to be mentors?

Yes, there will be mentors on location.

Who is judging the teams?

Each challenge owner will determine one winner for each individual challenge and award prizes. The winners of each challenge will automatically qualify for the MegaHack pitching competition that will be judged by a panel formed by challenge owners and representatives of the organizers.

What are the judging criteria?

The teams should focus on the effectiveness of the solution but you will be awarded points for complexity, completeness, creativity, originality. Three prizes will be awarded for the quality of the presentations.

Will there be wireless internet access?

Yes, there will. You can bring a Wi-Fi dongle as backup if you want though.

Can I use any coding language or software package?

Yes. Any language you feel comfortable with is fine for us. However, you should only use licensed copies of software. In developing your solution, you should not use content that is copyrighted, protected by trade secret or otherwise subject to third-party intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights, unless you are the owner of such rights or have permission from their rightful owner to use the content. We recommend using only third-party works that are licensed through an open-source (for software), open-hardware (for electronics) or creative commons license (for all other works).

Which language will be used, English or Romanian?

Either English or Romanian is fine with us.

What do I need to bring?

Please bring your laptop and charger, mouse and mousepad, notebook, pen and pencils, comfortable clothes, headphones and music, glasses and medication if necessary, whatever else you might need to complete your project including installed software. Don’t forget a mat and sleeping bag if you want to get some rest.

Optionally you can bring an extension cord and a Wi-Fi dongle.

What materials are provided?

We will provide wireless internet connection, extension cords, and plenty of pens, paper, markers and flip charts.

What should I not bring to the hackathon?

The access with flammable materials, poisonous or explosive substances, firearms or ammunition and generally anything that you could not take with you in an airplane as checked baggage is forbidden. Unfortunately you cannot bring your pet or underage children. The only minors allowed on-site are the registered participants.

Is there any food provided?

Yes, we will provide some of the food: the morning coffee and snacks, fruits, drinks (water, energy drinks, beer), sweets and pizza in the evening.

Can I leave my laptop overnight at the location?

Although members of the organizing team will stay overnight, we are not responsible for any belongings left unattended. If you plan to go home take your laptop with you.

What are the prizes?
